  • Ranila's Bday

Just wanted to take a moment to post from pics from my little sister's bday bash at the Opera House on September 6th. I am so backed up with updates, it's ricockulous. Well, here they are...
    <sisters...bday girl in the center.

<umm...i had 4 shots of jack before i headed to the party. <She was getting mad that i was ruining all her bday pics. Truth is I gave her one normal pose for evey 3 silly ones. That's how I roll.
<3rd shot of tequila. At this point the tequila tasted like honey. < <3 my sisters
     <Trying to be sexy. <uh...I'm a jackass. <thought I was so slick.
     <So hungry.

    The end.

  • Exhausted...

I finally got almost everything together for our big book party/art gallery tomorrow. I'm so pooped. Let me tell you, soooo many things went wrong while I was getting things together, that there were plenty of times that I wanted to give up. These shoots were really tough to pull. I did them all with my remote which was not easy considering the situations I was sticking myself into.

It's like extreme self-portraiture. I was gagging, choking, pretty much almost vomiting, almost caught my shirt on fire, and just basically beating myself up for these photos. These are pictures that I had been wanting to draw/paint, but I decided to actually feel what I was going for and threw myself into these abusive situations. Oh man...and at the same time I had to suck it up and check my camera from time to time to realize that composition or lighting was off at the wrong times and start all over.

Then, I realized after I cropped and saved the images that my dimensions were the size wrong for print, I already bought the frames, AND I didn't save finished un-cropped images. (This is what happens when you do things at the last minute while you're boozing to cope with the stress...not health or smart...sigh) So I had to spend extra time placing the finished photos back onto the original un-cropped ones and re-crop them to the right size. CHEESES!

While I was in the middle of framing my photos, I realized that one of the frames I got from Aaron Brothers was severely cracked, so I had to go to Marina Del Rey to return it and get another one. When I finally got down to the last frame, I couldn't find the mounting hardware, so I'll have to wake up early and freaking go back to Aaron brothers for 4 little screws and 2 mounting hooks... I bet I'll find it Sunday, and regretfully shove it in my junk drawer.

It's these little things that are just driving me bananas. I don't know how many times I 'lost' the remote for my camera during very crucial moments of shooting. I'm so glad I'm pretty much done though. I've been working my ass off for 2 weeks straight. All I have to do now is finish that 1 frame, stock up on some booze for the party, help organize the gallery/party space, and look hot for tomorrow night. WOOH!! One thing I do know how to do is partttay!!! Lots of my girls that I love and miss will be there, so I'm pretty excited. Almost all the Living Dolls will be there, with the exception of Lina and Sphinx. Guess I better hit the sack.

  • Catching up...bacara...etc.

Man, my content is getting a bit backed up when it comes to what I actually want to document in my life. Things are getting more and more hectic, as I had expected. I still really want to finish writing about Hawaii, but I guess I'll put that off again. =( We'll see.
So my little getaway to Bacara was just what I needed. It's such an awesome getaway. I'd totally recommend it to anyone, but especially to those who are just stressed out in LA and  need a convenient escape for the weekend. It's not a far drive and the views on the way aren't too shabby at times.
I didn't get the same room that I stayed in last time, as requested, but the room I did get was just as nice, actually it was better. This room had a fireplace and upgraded tiles/flat screen tv in addition to a beautiful ocean view.

    <view from our balcony.
After checking in I had a quick snack at the pool restaurant, then headed to the spa for my 90 min sport massage. I only added a body balancer (self-heating mud applied to the spine) this time. I didn't want them to put oil in my hair because I had dinner reservations shortly after my treatment. It was a nice massage. The woman who gave me my massage totally reminded me of Molotov Cocktease. I couldn't understand a thing she said and she was quite aggressive. I was picturing a knife in my back at any moment until I nodded off. That's my kind of massage. Suspenseful, yet oddly relaxing.

For dinner we went to Bacara's  fine dining restaurant, Miro. This restaurant has all the makings of a successful fine dining experience...nice decor... a beautiful ocean view with a romantic beach-y ambiance...an interesting tasting menu... but oh folks, I have a couple of not-so-nice things to say about Miro. First of all, I've been to plenty of fine dining spots, believe you me and none were as unaccommodating as Miro. I have never been to a fine dining restaurant that was unable to tweak the tasting menu a bit to suit my date's request to replace some of the meat dishes with seafood dishes. We do this ALL the time. There is an optional vegetarian tasting, which is fine, but it didn't seem as interesting and he does eat seafood. He's not a rabbit. Anyways, after requesting the tweaking of the menu, the waiter responded in a sort of snippy tone that the chef doesn't like to switch his tasting menu around because he has a certain number of dishes and it would....blah blah numbers.... Wtf? Okay, what he said basically gave me the impression that some of the dishes were pre-made or pre-prepared. It's fine dining! Was the food being prepared on some kind of assembly line? Were we  going to ruin the ratio of meats to vegetables by defying the menu? I mean, the god damned restaurant was quite empty when we got there, but at the same time, it's a big restaurant. How could they not accommodate such a common request?

Anyways, since the waiter was one of those haughty fairies who was probably picked on a lot as a child, I decided arguing would put us on a speedboat to nowheresville. He just ordered the 5 course vegetarian tasting and threw in an extra seafood entree for good measure. I had the 7 course tasting with wine pairings for each course. So we were 1 course off which was kind of annoying. The food was decent. I had frog legs for the first time. They taste sort of like chicken or quail. I thought it was going to have a bit of a funky swampy taste, but it wasn't bad at all. I didn't take many pictures of the meal, simply because I forgot. The waiter made me too infuriated to remember. I kid, I wasn't really mad, just a little irritated and surprised. The food was good, at best. Some ingredients weren't as fresh as I would have liked them to be. Some things were a bit on the salty side. They did have some pretty good olive bread and the wine was great.
<this wasn't decent, but no WOW factor.
<this was actually pretty good. it wasn't one of my courses. These looked like cute little gnome hats.
<my main course. the roll was a bit off for me. the meat was tender, but a bit salty, so were the roll and the mushrooms. Could I get some meat with my salt? Thanks. No, it wasn't that bad. haha. I didn't eat much more than what was pictured though . I wanted to save myself for dessert.
<His seafood course. Much better than mine. it was yummy.
<my dessert. eh...it was like donuts and pudding. I concentrated on stealing bites of his. =P
<we totally demolished this dessert. It wasn't spectacular or anything. it just happened to be the better dessert.<after dinner snacks...mehhh. i took a nibble of each one. they were alright.

Oh, Miro. I wish I could say that I'd love to try you again sometime, but I probably won't. There are just too many fine dining spots in the SB area that I'd like to try. You had your chance. Maybe some day....just don't hold your breathe. I'm sure you won't.

<it's a blurry pic, but this is me by the fireplace after dinner. This is one of the convertible dresses I got in Hawaii. You can wear it a bunch of different ways and it's only $100. It's really cute. I always get compliments from random people when I wear these dresses. =)

My first treatment the following day was the shiro-bindi. This was an interesting treatment. First they give you this card to feel out with all these questions about your usual temperament and your physical condition. Some of the questions were sort of funny. They were multiple choice and the some choices were not at all my condition. THere would be questions like how are your bowel movements? a)small, hard, constipation b)normal, firm, oily c)loose, watery, diarrhea ....haha. I was like where's the none of the above box. Yeesh!
So after filling out the crazy questionnaire, you lay on a heated bed. The girl gave me a massage with some herbal oil then rubs on this botanical body mask. Everything is supposed to be customized to suit the answers on that card. Then comes a gentle, warm stream of oil onto my forehead and through my hair, followed by a gentle scalp massage. This was so relaxing. I love scalp massages. The stream of oil felt really good. After ward she gave me some special tea made for my particular  being.

I hit the shower at the spa to wash off. I was covered in muck and my hair was drenched in oil, but it was so worth it.  I would totally do that treatment again. I felt refreshed and relaxed.

I had one more treatment, which was the Sonya Dakar Ultraluxe Facial "This new facial from Sonya Dakar combines cutting-edge technology with Sonya’s exclusive Interval Massage technique to gently reverse the signs of aging on the face, neck, décolleté and hands. Lymphatic drainage techniques help eliminate accumulated toxins stored in the facial area, a deep-pressure massage technique focusing on special trigger points assists in lifting and tightening the facial muscles. A final interval of lymphatic drainage does away with any remaining toxins. This unique no-steam facial using Nonaplex technology - a powerful blend of nine anti-aging ingredients - forms one of the most potent age-control systems available today. " The girl who did my facial was really nice. She was complimenting my skin. "Let's see if we can make your skin even more beautiful, if that's even possible," she stated. Oh flattery will get you everywhere, my dove. =) It was a great facial. My face felt plumper and I was glowing. I left the product on as long as possible. I just put makeup over it for dinner and I didn't even come close to breaking out. 2 thumbs up.

    Too be continued. I'm hungry.

  • back at bacara

i decided to go on a sporadic getaway before summer ended, so right now i'm at the beautiful Bacara in Goleta/Santa Barbara area. =) this place makes me so happy! i really needed a nice break. Today, I had an hour and a half sports massage with a body balancer. Tomorrow I'm scheduled for shiro-bindi and a facial. I'll write more later. It's 5am and I haven't slept yet!

  • ave's performance

I've been wanting to catch up with my blogging. There's lots that I've been wanting to sort of document about my life, since I've noticed my memory's been a bit shabby lately. I still haven't finished writing about Hawaii and there are a few nice restaurants that I've been wanting to write about. I guess I'll just try to write about things little by little when I get the chance.

Not sure if it was last week or two weeks ago. (Times been flying by so fast nowadays) Well, my big sis, Ave, performed with her band,  Patternforms. Here are some snapshots from the event.
    <The band....Ave singing.
< This was funny to me. My old best friend from 6th grade was there. =) She looks EXACTLY the same!
<Me, Ave, and Autumn- 3 Living Dolls =) Yeaah, I always look stiff in pics, it's me trying to look skinny. haha.
My parents showed up. Yup, these are our parents. =)
<Trying to look cute. haha. I look retarded.

Oh, by the way, if you'd like to purchase my book, "Living Dolls", just go to http://inkpenmutations.com and go to the books section. =)

  • bad week

everything that could go wrong has gone wrong this week. my temper flared last night and i ended up kicking in the windshield of my car. yup there's a huge crack in it. i think i need to lay off the sauce for a while, but that's nearly impossible these days. fuck! I'm all bruised up, too. my wrists, knuckles, knees, shins, and my thighs are fucked. Yeah, I got into a fist fight. Someone needed a couple of goose eggs on the old coconut and I was willing to hand them over... I had so much that I wanted to blog about but I think I'll just ice my knuckles. Actually, from the looks of it, I think I'll be needing an ice bath. my body's gonna hate me even more tomorrow.

  • San Diego Comic con '08 ! pics

I knew I just wasn't going to have enough time to finish writing about my awesome trip to Oahu. I had so  many fun tales to tell about that trip, but I guess I'll get back to it if I have time.

Comic con was loads of fun! I was exhausted the whole time. I had very little sleep each night and I was rocking 8 inch heels and 18" corsets every day, so I was pretty much beating myself up while in san diego (whales penis). I have to say though, I had fun.

We sold lots of books, and I wasn't planning on doing this, but I sold out of most of my prints which was great. I had thousands of photos shot during the convention, which made me a bit blind the whole time, but I think it was all worth it. I was inspired by it all and now I have 2 new projects that I am going to work on for the next con. =)

I didn't have much of a chance to really walk around until the end of each day since it takes me 45 minutes to walk 20 feet due to all the photo requests. It was tiring trying to walk around, so I stayed at my booth and hustled my ass off. We were selling 5 different books including "Living Dolls", T-shirts, art work, and prints which meant loads of talking and what have you. Plus I had lots of signing to do, which I didn't have to do at all during past comic cons.

Well, here are some pics of the BIG 2008 San Diego Comic Con

     <preview night. pre-dressup time.
<day 3 tired, but still trying to pose.
    <great monarch costume !
<The sis showing off her boots to the crowd.
<me and the lil sis, Ranila, who is also another Living Doll.
< He turned his head for the photo and got a real kiss. I wonder if people took pics of the lipgloss on his cheek. haha.
< This was a heavy gun! I like..

<I see this hippie every year.
<This is the face I make, if someone tells me to smile. I don't take requests, asshole.
<The end of the last day...I was delirious.
    <with a hunger for warriors....I saw Heman's package.
<It was nice to be able to sneak shots in at the end without the crowds.
< I even got a shot with iron man with out the ropes around him. This was one of the actual suits from the movie. I didn't actually touch it at all, but it was nice to get a pic nice and close. =) I almost got in trouble with some lady Elite. It's always the lady elites starting the trouble. All the male elites were sweet hearts. =)
< I got tired of making smiley faces so i started making pouty faces.

  • Oahu Day 3

I woke up feeling pretty shitty the next morning, but I had no time to recuperate because I had to head back to North Shore for my shark adventure at 10:30. So I got dressed and grabbed the papaya and banana that the hotel left as a gift and headed straight to the harbor. When we got there, I was feeling pretty sick. I think it was a combination of anxiety, lack of sleep, and partying to hard the night before. I sort of wanted to vomit before heading to our boat, but I sucked it up and hoped for the best.

The boat wasn't very big and it had a little cage strapped to the back.

We were a group of 6 which was just enough for us to all fit under the front end of the boat to stay dry. If you don't stay at the front end of the boat while the boat moves, you get pretty soaked and with all the wind, I could see how it could get pretty chilly. The boat ride is about 15 minutes about 3 miles away from the shore.
< heading out to the shark zone.

Then the boat sort of just sways out in the middle of the ocean. This part was pretty sickening. The captain said the water was actually pretty choppy and that he was close to telling the group after us that it might not be to safe to go out....quite the encouraging words. They separated us into 2 sessions. I was part of the second group to go in.
<excited (and maybe a little scared) when the boat stopped in the shark zone.

It was pretty scary to see all the sharks surrounding the cage. The workers were baiting them to stay near the cage. The sharks looked huge from the boat. They told us that they normally see Galapagos and sandbar sharks. I was amazed at how many there were.

After the excitement of initially seeing the sharks, I started feeling really nauseous. The boat was rocking way to much and at a really slow and sickening pace. Looking at the horizon did not work for me. I was feeling disoriented. At one point, I sort of just laid out in the middle of the boat and looked at the sky to see if that would work. I knew I had to get into the water soon or I'd be losing the papaya that I had for breakfast.
I really wanted to buy and underwater camera, but by the time it was our turn to get in the cage, I didn't care anymore. I just wanted to get in the water and off the boat.

This experience was absolutely AMAZING. The sharks were fucking gi-normous and there were lots of them! U have to get the rhythm of the cage or you'll get tossed around and banged up quite a bit. You where snorkels and sort of just float in the water toward the top of the cage. I found a nice spot in the front left side of the cage. That's where I remembered that they were tossing the bait. I must have counted at least 12 Huge sharks. I'm pretty sure they were Galapagos. There were also tons of little shiny fish swimming around them. it was beautiful and scary. My heart was beating so fast the whole time. I loved it. It was such a wonderful rush. The water was nice and warm, too. I wish I had bought that underwater cam, because it was so clear and awesome. All the sharks looked so different from one another up close. Some had scars and things on their gills. It was fucking great just seeing them. They looked curious, but not really harmful as they circled the cage. I sort of wanted to touch the tails of a couple of them as they passed by, but they warned us not to during the orientation and I wasn't about to lose a limb out in paradise. There were sharks on all sides and at the bottom of the cage. It was insane! I think they give you about 20 minutes in the cage which is plenty of time.
<Captain said to throw our hands up for the photo

<Some sharks around the cage. I was joking that it'd be just our luck to have some sword fish come by and try to thrust at us while we were in there. =P
< This funny bird decided to hitch a ride while we were under. It sort of startled me when I had to go to the back of the cage for them to reel us in. The bird sort of flapped his wings at me and squawked when moved near him. He was more of a threat than the sharks. hehe. Silly bird.

I loved the shark adventure. The experience was awesome and the workers were really cool characters to hang out with. I didn't vomit, but I heard that 2 of the other people vomited off the side of the boat while we were in the water. Eh. eww. This was one of the coolest things I've ever done. I love watching blue planet and other underwater nature shows, so this was the best. Aside from getting sick, it was the perfect tour.

After the shark tour, I went back to Macky's since it was nearby. Once the car stopped, I hopped out and hunched over grabbing my tummy. I almost threw up, but after crouching down for a few minutes, I felt better. I had the lemon pepper shrimp this time, which is also tasty, but I sort of wished that I got the butter garlic because it's better to me.

We headed to Kualoa Ranch to see if we could catch a horseback riding tour. It turned out to be booked for the day. They had other tours available, but the girl working there did a real good job at discouraging us from doing what they had available. She described things as "too shaky","really scary", and "dangerous", while  expressing how much she didn't enjoy those tours. I left a bit disappointed, but at the same time relieved because I was exhausted and still a bit nauseous from being out in the choppy water.

We decided to head back to Waikiki, which was a beautiful scenic drive on the east side of the island. We drove with the top down because the sun wasn't so intense. It was so beautiful and it just felt really great feeling the clean air surrounding me.
<Bathroom stop. Look at the beautiful mountains!
< Me with the little pocket cam. I get paranoid lugging my camera around in hawaii, if I'm not able to keep it on me. They leave so many warnings to tourists about protecting their belongings and what not.
    <Another snapshot.

<Approaching the city. This is when it started getting hot again. We weren't able to get the top back up til we got off the freeway.

When we got back to the hotel I got ready for our dinner at Nobu Waikiki.<One of the dresses I got in San Francisco from bebe.
Nobu Waikiki just happened to be right across the street from our hotel which was nice. It was just as good as Nobu New York. I guess Nobu Malibu is just a shitty restaurant that shouldn't carry the Nobu name. I wonder why Nobu Malibu is rated so high in the Zagat. It really bothers me actually. Oh well. I've mentioned this before.
    Me and my first cocktail.
This menu offered Omakase options at $90, $110, and above so we decided to ask for a $150 Omakase.
< Enjoyed from left to right. Each was very tasty.
< great flavor. all the fish totally melted in my mouth. I had a feeling that Nobu Waikiki would not disappoint.
<This was nice and refreshing, but I think 2 pieces would have been better.
<eh getting a little bored waiting between courses.
<Yummy lobster dynamite. The asparagus and mushrooms were a nice touch. Sometimes dynamite has too much sauce and seems to rich. This was perfect.
<Washu beef. Easily one of the BEST beef dishes I've ever had. It was like butter, so tender it melted in my mouth. I was so stuffed by the time I got this, but I finished every bite! It was so delicious prepared and cooked to perfection!
< more sushi I was so stuffed, i just ate the tops of some of them.

<This was a well thought out and perfectly balanced dessert. My favorite was the center which was banana with macadamia, Shoyu (soy sauce) ice cream, and i think honey. You wouldn't think shoyu ice cream would be tasty , but it was delicious. It was sweet with a bit of a salty flavor sort of of like kettle corn. It was a beautiful combination The dessert on the right was also yummy with pistachio sorbet and nuts, haupia sorbet and berries. The one on the left was more of a refreshing melon dessert. Nice for cleansing the palette between bites.

The food was very delicious at Nobu Waikiki. All of the flavors were delicious and well balanced. The fish was very fresh. I only had one problem which was portion size. The portions were again a bit too large. I guess they eat more in Hawaii. Don't get me wrong. I love eating and I have a big appetite, but I like to pace myself. Plus, they didn't really tell us how many courses we were going to have, so we ended up getting stuffed long before the main courses. Half portions of all the dishes would have easily been more than enough for me.

  • Oahu Day 2

The next day, I decided to head up to North Shore because I could not wait to get back to my favorite shrimp truck, Macky's.  I also wanted my friend to check out Waimea Falls.
First, I had breakfast at the Halekulani's casual dining restaurant, Orchids. I had the Japanese breakfast, which was pretty yummy and a nice balanced meal to start my day. It consisted of Grilled Fresh Fish with Steamed Rice, Japanese Pickles, Miso Soup, Dried Seaweed, Egg, fresh fruit, and green tea.  The view from Orchids is beautiful and the service is very  friendly, plus it was conveniently located at my hotel, so I was pretty sure that I'd be enjoying breakfast there a lot.

    <With my japanese breakfast.
<The view from where I was sitting- the ocean and diamond head.
On the way to north shore we stopped by the Dole plantation to get some dole whipped in a waffle cone and so my friend can check out the touristy stuff. Well, we didn't go in that god awful maze though. I know better nowadays. There's nothing worse than feeling trapped in that maze while the sun is beaming down on you at full strength. We just got the whip, looked at the different pineapple plants, and took pics in the novelty spots.
<My billionth time having my photo taken in this spot. No one ever wants to do it alone. haha.
<Driving with the top down for a while. This didn't last too long because the sun was a bit too intense at that time.

We drove to Waimea Valley and the lady told us that since there had been a lack of rain there were no falls. I also didn't see any of the awesome birds lounging around the start of the park, so I decided maybe it wasn't the best time to check out the rest.

We headed back to Haleiwa, where we picked up some nice towels (that we never ended up using during the trip) and a hat. The main reason why we went back down there was to hit up  Macky's. During my last trip I was bummed because Macky's used to be right next to Sunset beach and it was nowhere near it. I found out that they moved right at the start of old Haleiwa town near a 7 eleven. I know there are lots of shrimp trucks further north, but I've tried most of them, including the famous Giovonni's and Macky's is still my favorite. They just prepare it better at Macky's. They have more variety at Macky's as well like coconut shrimp, lemon pepper, original, hot and spicy, and my favorite butter mutha effin garlic. Mmmm mmm, bitch. I forgot to take pics because I was too busy stuffing my face.

Then we stopped by the Haleiwa harbor to check out the shark adventure tour. They were closing up so we decided to make a reservation for the following day.

We headed back to Waikiki to swim for a bit near our hotel and then I got ready to head out to our next fine dining destination, Alan Wong's.

<Eh not my best swimsuit photo, but this is me at Waikiki.
< A dress I got from positively haight in San Francisco. I think it was only about $60. =)
Alan Wong's is a bit tricky to get to. It's on a one way street (King St) that has lots of shitty streets leading to it and if you pass it you have to go back around. It was a real pain in the ass getting there, but it turned out to be a cute spot.

The food at Alan Wong's is pretty delicious. The bread comes with this fucking yummy sort of spicy, super garlic-y butter that I absolutely loved. I had the 7 course tasting meal with wine pairing. I have to say, most of the dishes were rich and tasty, which was a bit overwhelming for a 7 course meal. The portions were way to big, too. I found it hard to pace myself during this meal. I guess it wasn't the best balanced meal that I've had, although some of the dishes were very delicious.
<Sushi starter. Very fresh, and well balanced. I loved the variety of flavors. This was a nice clean dish.

    “SOUP AND SANDWICH”
Chilled Vine Ripened Hamakua Springs Tomato Soup with Grilled Mozarella Cheese, Foie Gras, Kalua Pig Sandwich
Veuve Clicquot, “Yellow Label”, France, N.V

<The sandwich was really yummy. Kalua pork and foie gras...such a delicious combo. I loved the sandwich, and although the soup was cute, it was a bit rich and I wasn't too crazy about it.

    PAN SEARED HUDSON
    VALLEY FOIE GRAS

    Li Hing Mui Chutney
Barton & Guestier, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France, 2002
<This dish is probably one of my favorites from this trip. I loved the foie gras with Li hing Mui chutney. The flavors were rich and delicious. The portion was big, and in this case, perfect, because I LOVED every bite. The wine went well very well with this dish. mmmmm...

<I can't say this dish really stood out for me. I think I was getting full and since the flavor wasn't too great (it was a bit too flavorful to follow the rich foie gras), I only took a few bites. I have to say though, all of the Alan wong private label wines were really good.
< I didn't see this on the sites menu, but it was lobster and abalone. I really like this dish. It was delicious.
I think I was a bit too buzzed to remember to take pictures of my striploin beef course. I do remember that the meat was a bit tough, so I only had a few bites so I could save room for my dessert.
<I remembered liking the dessert on the far left with the tropical fruit “Coconut Tapioca” Passion Fruit Sorbet and Fresh Fruits combined with the haupia sorbet. The mango cheesecake was only okay and the chocolate was good but not my favorite.

I left feeling so stuffed with rich foods and wine... the next morning was going to be a bitch...
